How Can Magnesium L-Threonate Give Me A Better Memory?

Studies conducted on memory-impaired, aged rats over 24 days produced interesting results when given magnesium l-threonate versus a control group. The group receiving the magnesium had an increase in cerebrospinal magnesium increasing short and long-term memory scores.

Another study on memory-impaired, aged rats established that magnesium l-threonate could reverse cognitive dysfunction in normal aging humans. Adding the magnesium to the rat’s drinking water for one month caused a significant improvement in short-term memory.

What About Humans Developing Better Memory?

There was a need for the researchers to verify the mechanism behind improvements in memory and cognitive performance. To do this studies that precisely measured the synaptic structural components in the rat’s brains became necessary.

What the researchers discovered during the necropsy findings was that in the group that received the magnesium l-threonate the synaptic density was 67% higher than in the control group that didn’t receive the magnesium.

To record the effects on humans, MIT researchers created a clinical trial studying older people with early cognitive impairment. This group was supplemented with magnesium l-threonate or a placebo every day for 12 weeks. Their brain age based on cognitive function was 68.3 years old although they only averaged 57.8 years of physical years. By the time the trial ended, the magnesium group reduced their brain age by nine years.

Another human trial showed promising preliminary results in patients diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia. Even at this more advanced stage of cognitive decline, magnesium L-threonate led to improvements in cognition and executive function.1
